Myanmar: Yangon – Maha Wiziya Pagoda

Just across the busy street from the Shwedagon Pagoda complex is another spectacular pagoda – Maha Wiziya Pagoda. This one is not ancient, building between 1960s and 1980. It was commemorated to the 2500th anniversary of Buddha’s death and real Buddha relics were contributed by the King of Nepal. A very unique feature of the Maha Wizaya Pagoda is its main stupa in the center of the building. Unlike the stupas of most Burmese temples, this stupa is hollow and open to visitors and has insanely decorated internal dome – light blue in color and covered with animal and religious murals. There are more structures outside the main stupa – shrines and gates and a traditional Buddhist umbrella. And of course there is a lot of gold everywhere, you get totally blinded by all the shine in sunny weather.
