Myanmar: Paya Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple

Paya Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Yangon and the country. It houses one of the largest reclining buddhas in the world – a whopping 66m / 217 ft long. The image is adorned with intricate details and features, including its expressive facial features and the soles of its feet that depict the 108 sacred Buddhist symbols – these symbols often appear in Buddhist art and are associated with various episodes from the Buddha’s life, conveying profound spiritual messages. The original Paya Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda was built in the early 20th century, but the reclining Buddha statue that exists today was constructed in the 1960s to replace the original image, which had suffered from weather damage.
