Netherlands: Breda

Breda lies almost in the Belgian border and is major tourist draw due to its very compact well-preserved medieval historic old town that is totally pedestrian. There was a castle here from the 12th century, but the major fortifications with moats and defensive walls were built in the 16th century. Breda saw major sieges and action against the Spanish, British, and then finally French. Grote Markt is in the center of old town with Grote Kerk and Stadhuis. The Grote Kerk, built in 1290 in early Gothic style, is quite spectacular with a 97m tower, and unusual with frescoes on the columns and ornate interior, there was also a fashion exhibition inside.
