New Zealand: Bay of Islands – Cruising to Hole in the Rock

The Bay of Islands contains 144 islands, many bays and peninsulas and inlets and is awesome to explore by ship. Panoramic views abound as you cruise out of the protected inner bay and into the open ocean toward the main attraction – the Hole in the Rock formation aka Piercy Island, located off the northern tip of Cape Brett. In Maori it’s know as Motu Kokako, and has a massive religious and historical significance to the Maori as the legend states it was this rock where the first Maori canoe landed at. The protected island has two petrel species and two endemic lizards living here in absolute safety.
