New Zealand: Russel – Christ Church

Russell being the first town where the Europeans settled in New Zealand naturally has the oldest Christian church in the country – the Christ Church aka Te Whare Karakia o Kororareka in Maori language. The Anglican church was built in 1835, it witnessed the historical events of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. The structure itself endured multiple moves and renovations over the years, and today’s stands as a small but beautiful wooden building with a cemetery full of old crosses in front of it, holding the graves of notable figures from the 19th century.
