Romania: Valea Viilor Fortified Church

One more fortified Transylvanian churh – Valea Viilor Fortified Church – is absolutely awesome. The church was built in 1263 in gothic style and was then enlarged and fortified with defense walls and three bastion towers in the 15th century to protect against continuous Ottoman invasions. We could even climb all the way to the top of the main church tower, on squeaking wooden ladders and flimsy floors – not for the faint-hearted! The church is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
