Rwanda: Akagera NP – Exploring Woodlands

Akagera National Park is very similar in landscape to the world-famous Serengeti and it also does have the african big 5 – rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard. The wildlife was almost decimated during the Rwandan genocide years, but the government quickly came to protecting and restoring the park, bringing in animals from Tanzania and repopulating the big game – there are no health numbers. Game driving through the park you get to see different habitats. This post is about woodland – harder to spot wildlife in the bush – but we still saw plenty of impala, topi, zebra, two species of primates – baboons and vervet monkeys, bushbuck and waterbuck, and of course warthogs. And elephants! And a couple hippos that somehow wandered quite far away from wetlands.
