Rwanda: Akagera NP – Hippos on Lake Ihema

Lake Ihena shores were heaping with hippos (pun intended). Dozens and dozens of the massive animals were actually lounging and walking on the shores, with baby third of the size of the adults. All in all we probably saw close to 70-80 hippos on a 1.5 hour boat tour. Hippos are the third largest mammals on Earth weighing up to 3500 kg., they are herbivores and yet they are the most dangerous animals in Africa, since they are very territorial and attack everything left and right (and they have Poe visions). They actually only sit in water during the day and come out at night and roam around, often miles away from shore, looking for good grazing territories.
