San Marino: Fortresses of Mount Titano

The land-locked San Marino is only 61 sq km of land, but is the world’s first sovereign republic, dating back to 301 AD. The entire country is basically Is located on a mountain top of Monte Titano, where the mountain’s three peaks are topped by three medieval fortresses with spectacular panoramic views. The three fortresses of San Marino are Guaita, the oldest of the three from the 11th century), the 13th century Cesta, located on the highest of Monte Titano’s summits; and the 14th century Montale, on the smallest of Monte Titano’s summits. The three are linked by a paved path, the Passo delle Streghe or Witches’ Passage. All three iconic fortresses are featured on both the San Marino flag and coat of arms and are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
