Serbia: Novi Pazar – Church of the Holy Apostles St Peter and Paul

Just a few kilometers outside of the majority Muslim town of Novi Pazar in Serbia lies the oldest Serbian Orthodox church in the country, Church of the Holy Apostles St Peter and Paul. In fact this is the oldest surviving church in the entire Balkan region, dating back to the Byzantine times around 4th century AD, and built in the current shape in the 9th century. Naturally, this treasure is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Serbian national state councils were held at this church in the 12th century. The interior is simply stunning with amazing original frescoes and multistory layout, you can actually climb to the second floor and see the ceiling frescoes upclose. In front of the church is a an ancient cemetery.
