South Georgia: Jason’s Harbor – Zodiac Cruising

Jason’s Harbor was out next stop, not a usual landing site in South Georgia, but rather shielded from the punishing winds and thus allowing both north zodiac cruising and land exploration. Cruising on inflatable zodiacs along the coast, we spotted tons of fur seals with pups, and lots of birds – from giant petrels to endemic blue-eyed cormorants (separate post coming next) to especially interesting Wilson’s storm petrels (Oceanites oceanicus). It is one of the smallest sea birds in the Antarctic water, at only 15cm long, but they live almost entirely at sea and are very skillful fishers, skimming the water with their feet stretched giving the appearance of running on water. And of course the surrounding landscapes and scenery were to die for.
