South Georgia: South Georgia Cormorant

Another purely endemic species on South Georgia is the South Georgia Cormorant. Many islands in the subantarctic have their own species of cormorants, all genetically different as they evolved in isolation on these island. These are fairly large birds, mostly black and metallic back and pure white front. They are excellent divers, feeding on small fish like silverfish or lanternfish. They breed on rocky ledges and small offshore cliffs and island. The most startling feature on them are the brightly blue eyes.
