Thailand: Sukhotai – Wat Mahathat Temple
Wat Mahathat Temple is the most impressive and spectacular of all the temples in Sukhotai, built between 1292 and 1347 as the main temple of the Kingdom to hold the most important relics. Everything is centered around a central stupa that is shaped as a lotus bud (Sukhotai stupa style), with the stucco sculptures of Buddha disciples walking hand in hand and the base of it. There are two 9 meter (20 feet) tall Buddhas standing on each side of the stupa, and then another 8 smaller stupas in the corners of the complex.
