Uganda: Lake Victoria – Lakeflies

On our third day at Mabamba Lodge we got to witness tue emergence of swarms of lakeflies from Lake Victoria. Lakeflies emerge in millions and all together, usually just following the new moon. For most of the time they just lie and swim as larvae in the lake, but then on the new moon night they all pupate at the same time on the lake’s surface and emerge simultaneously the next morning in massive numbers. Swarms fly ashore and cover everything – trees, bushes, building – a total insanity!
