Uruguay: Colonia del Sacramento – Plaza de Toros

If you think bullrings only exist in Spain – come to Colonia del Sacramento. The town has a spectacular and massive bullring – Plaza de toros Real de San Carlos. It was built in 1909 and officially inaugurated in January 10 with a bullfight with several famous bullfighters and 10,000 spectators. And then….. after just a couple more bullfights, bullfighting was completely outlawed in Uruguay in 1912 (although the corned beef production contributed unimpeded until 1979). The bullring stood abandoned until 2020, when it was renovated and turned into a concert venue.
