Zanzibar: Stone Town – Old Fort of Zanzibar

The Old Fort of Zanzibar is the oldest building on the island, located at the waterfront position at the tip of the historic Stone Town. It was built in the 17th century at the height of the Sultanate of Oman to protect against the Portuguese and is square in shape with four defensive round tours and high walls. It’s built from coral limestone. You can climb the walls and into the towers for some awesome panoramic views of the sea and the Stone Town. The Old Fort serves as a symbol of the island’s complex history, including its Omani, Portuguese, and Swahili influences. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town, it plays an important role in preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of Zanzibar.
