Zanzibar: The maze of the old Stone Town
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historic maze of an old town consisting of endless narrow streets and alleys that twist and turn and connect without any order. Similar to many other medinas in other ancient capitals in the Muslim world (Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt), the heart of Stone Town in Zanzibar is interesting as it exhibits an incredible mix of Muslim, African, Indian and European cultures all blended together. There are elaborately ornate carved doors with Islamic themes and brass studs reinforcing them against elephants. There are mosques and churches crammed side by side into the narrow labyrinth of streets. There is also an abandoned hamam. You are absolutely guaranteed to get lossed here, and that is the appeal of the adventure of exploring the Stone Town.
