Austria: Salzburg – Fortress Hohensalzburg
Fortress Hohensalzburg literally means “high Salzburg castle”, as it’s sits high on a hill overlooking the city down below. It is one of the largest and most impressive medieval fortresses in Europe. A funicular takes you up where you can explore the bastions, have panoramic views toward the city and the alps in the south, and also see expositions in the museum inside (weapons, torture tools, etc. – fun stuff). Then you descend down the hill for more expansive views of Salzburg.
