Brazil: Rio de Janeiro – Christ the Redeemer

he Giant statue of Christ the Redeemer aka Cristo Redentor is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It stands on top of the Corocovado Mountains looming high over the Rio de Janeiro. The statue was built between 1922 and 1931, and is over 30 meter/90 feet high with arms outstretched wide. It’s a total human zoo all around it (nearly 2.5 million people visit it every year), but the panoramic views Rio de Janeiro are stupendous. Due to the statue’s mountaintop location, it’s prone to lightning strikes and gets hit around three to six times a year (once the lightning even chopped off the statue’s thumb).
