Burundi: Road Scenery Climbing from Bujumbura

Climbing from Bujumbura One you leave the relative lowlands of Bujumbura and Lake Tanganyika, the road climbs very quickly and steeply to about 6,000 feet in relatively short distance. First, you are treated to panoramic views of the city of Bujumbura down below. Later the landscape turns into mountains and hills, all checkered in small agricultural plots and fields – Burundi is mostly a subsistence agriculture country – population lives off land for personal consumption and small barter-like trading. Sweet potatoes, regular (they call it Irish) potatoes, some wheat, tea and coffee are the main crops.
