China/Hainan: Haikou Qilou Snack Street

This is a famous and historic arcade-type building that’s part of the old town Haikou. The entire building is packed with former street-food vendors that are now located in one spot, pitching the traditional Hainanese cuisine. Another, narrower and even more authentic street is to the left of the historic one. Here you can sample all the Hainanese specialties and beyond – a lot of seafood (Hainan is surrounded by South China Sea after all), and plenty of weird stuff like scorpions, bugs, even tarantula, whole chicken fetuses grilled, snails, baby octopus, fresh juices, loads of fruits, various dumplings, frogs, shellfish, and meats on the sticks.
