Germany: Hamburg – St. Michael’s Church

t. Michael’s Church (Hauptkirche Sankt Michaelis) is the most famous church in Hamburg. The magnificent baroque structure built between 1750-1762 is the place to start your exploration of Hamburg. An elevator takes you to the top of the 132m /433ft clock tower. From here you get a panoramic view in the entire 360 – from the old town to the Hamburg Port to TV tower and all around. Interestingly the church itself served as a lighthouse of sorts for the ships sailing into the Hamburg port in the past. The clock in the tower is the largest in Germany. The interior of the church is also lavish and minimalist at the same time (as are all German churches) – a lot of white marble here. The church has five organs.
