Greece/Corfu: Corfu – Old Fortress

Without a doubt the most spectacular part of Corfu is the old city with the Old Fort of Corfu. The Old Fort was built by the Venetians in the 15th century (they ruled the island from 1386 to 1797). Originally, the town of Corfu was working the walls of the fortress and the extensive fortifications. Venetian’s separates the promontory from the rest of the island by digging out a moat channel, making the fortress impenetrable. It withstood three long sieges by the Ottoman armies in 1537, 1571, and 1716, the remaining un-conquered and making the Ottomans give up and go back. There is a church at the bottom, and spectacular views from the top. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site.
