Uruguay: Oxblood Lillies

As we drove along the flat Uruguayan interior, we stumbled on stunning flowers growing in profusion along the highways – dark purple red-blood lilies. Turns out these are endemic to Uruguay and are called Oxblood Lillies aka Rhodophiala Bifida. The flower are unusual since only the flowers emerge first – bright dark red and resembled early spring amaryllis. In US, this species is highly prized as ornamental and is difficult to cultivate, but here in Uruguay it grows wild!
